The Non-government disability sector is facing some real challenges. Wages are low, as are retention rates. Disability Support Professionals simply do not have the respect and rewards that they should have given the remarkable difference they make to the lives of people with a disability. In 2009 we have an opportunity to try and address these issues. On 30 June the agreements that govern the wages and conditions of employees by most Non-Government Disability Services Providers are due to be renegotiated through enterprise bargaining. HACSU is the union that specialises in representing Disability Support Staff. HACSU will be working closely with employees in NGO workplaces to develop a claim together and negotiate with employers to improve wages and conditions. If you’d like to help with our campaign, please contact the HACSU office on 1300 651 931 or by email hacsu@hacsu.asn.au. You might like to consider becoming a Union Contact or your workplace Delegate. If you don’t have the time to be a contact or Delegate, there are any number of ways you can help out. Why not do your bit by recruiting a few colleagues and get them to sign up as HACSU members.

"The Federal Government’s submission is a concerning development. It relegates workers’ rights to equal pay for work of equal value to second place against budget implications," said HACSU State Secretary Lloyd Williams.

At last, HACSU and the ASU can report to members that legislation to establish a portable long service leave scheme for the not for profit sector in Victoria is being tabled in Parliament today.
Union members may recall that in 2008, the Victorian Government announced the allocation of $1.2 million to the Department of Human Services to establish the scheme for the community sector in Victoria.
Following a feasibility report and an actuarial report the recommendations included that the scheme be established as prospective, compulsory and statutory.
