Health and Community Services Union

About Us

HACSU is a Victorian branch of the Health Services Union (HSU). HSU is registered organisation under the provisions of the Australian Workplace Relations Act 1996.

HACSU represents the majority of staff employed in psychiatric, intellectual disability and alcohol and drug services in Victoria.

As a Union HACSU represents members to provide the collective strength to bargain for reasonable wages and conditions and ensure proper professional standards are delivered.

Who are HACSU members?

The union covers workers in the public and private sectors as well as those employed by non government/non profit organisations

What jobs do HACSU members do?

HACSU members work in a variety of service settings and are employed in a range of occupational classifications including tertiary qualified and certificated nurses, health professionals, disability centred workers, program and support workers, trades and administration.

Where do HACSU members work?

HACSU members work in residential services and community based residential and non residential services, and support people in need of mental health services, disability services and alcohol and drug services generally.

A Brief History Of The Union

The Union was first registered under the Conciliation and Arbitration Act as a Federal Organisation on April 12, 1911, but had been operating on an informal basis for a number of years before that. It was then called "The Hospital and Asylum Attendants and Employees' Union", and its only members were in Victoria.

In 1914 the name was changed to "The Hospital Dispensary and Asylum Employees' Association". From 1924 branches in other states were formed.

Branch Committee of Management

The Branch Committee of Management is the governing body of HACSU. The committee meets on a regular basis to oversee the running of the union and set general policies and directions. Other than the full time officials, the State Secretary and Assistant State Secretary, the members of the committee volunteer their time to the union, all have full time jobs working in psychiatric, disability and alcohol and drug services.
