The Minister for Community Services, the Hon Lisa Neville MP, has invited nominations for the 2008 Annual Awards for Disability Support Workers. The purpose of the Awards is to recognise the achievements and value the role of direct support workers in the Victorian disability services field.The Awards celebrate the contribution of disability support workers and their professional relationships with people with a disability, their family members and friends, peers, other service providers and community networks. Nominees may work in any disability support service and their practice will be based on principles such as participation, inclusion and empowerment for people with a disability. The Awards are for staff that are employed in a state funded or operated disability service, work in a direct support role and have worked in the disability field for at least two years. Nominations will be accepted from peers, managers and people with a disability with up to five individuals and one team of disability support workers to receive an award. Sponsored by key disability sector employer representative bodies, unions and the Department of Human Services, the Awards will be presented at a ceremony on 27 November 2008 in conjunction with the Disability Support Workers’ Conference.
