Press Release: Kirinari Disability Workers Take to the Streets
25 August 2010

Health and Community Services Union members employed at Kirinari Community Services will be walking the streets of Wodonga tomorrow (26th August) at 2pm to garner community support for their campaign for a pay increase.

The HACSU members are fighting for a 3.25% pay increase. Kirinari were provided with a funding increase from the Victorian Government which contained provisions for a 3.25% pay increase in July 2009. Kirinari are yet to pass this pay increase on in full to its employees.

Kirinari provide residential, outreach and recreational programs for people with a disability in the Wodonga, Wangaratta, Albury, and Lavington areas.

“Our members have taken to the streets today to seek the support of the Wodonga community,” said HACSU State Secretary Lloyd Williams. “These are some of the lowest paid workers in Australia who make an incredible difference to the lives of people with a disability – it’s time for Kirinari to do the right thing.”

HACSU members began industrial action today after all other avenues for negotiation were finally exhausted last month.

“Most of the disability support providers around Victoria have passed on the funding increase to their members without the need for industrial action,” said Mr Williams. “I don’t know why Kirinari think that they are different and can pocketed this money that was intended for it’s hard working staff.”
